After becoming the NBA’s all-time leader in three pointers, Steph Curry released a wearable NFT metaverse sneaker to commemorate the historic shot.
Curry released the wearable sneakers through a partnership with Under Armour, a sportswear manufacturer. Their agreement creates the first ever cross-platform metaverse globally, featuring in-game functionality.
Stephen Curry celebrates milestone with NFT release
Curry released the NFT as he celebrates one of his most notable NBA accomplishments. Last week in a game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the point guard for the Golden State Warriors broke the all-time three-point NBA record after making the 2,974th shot in his historic career. The record had been held by Ray Allen.
To mark this achievement, Under Armour has announced its release of 2,974 NFTs in a collection dubbed “Genesis Curry Flow.” These NFTs will be inspired by the shoes Curry wore on the day he broke the record.
The NFT is interoperable, as users can wear them across three gaming metaverses, namely Decentraland, Gala Games and The Sandbox. These are the three leading metaverse projects in the crypto marketplace.
The sneakers have been valued at $333 each, which is another indication of this remarkable achievement. Under Armour said that the gains derived from this sale will be donated to various charities and will help ensure that the youth have access sports.
Curry will use his proceeds, through Curry Brand, to build three new basketball courts in Charlotte, New York City and Oakland. The NFT release was supported by Berlin Cameron, a boutique creative agency.
The founder of Berlin Cameron, Ewen Cameron, commented on this stating, “With the stature of Stephen’s achievement, we wanted to do something that truly “changed the metaverse game for good, and so the notion of the first sneaker that can travel across the platform and have genuine functionality and performance was born.”
NBA and NFTs
The NBA is one of the sports leagues that have ventured deeply into NFTs and the entire cryptocurrency space. Besides Curry, other NBA stars who publicly endorsed NFTs include Paul George from the Los Angeles Clippers and Josh Hart with the New Orleans Pelicans. In September, Curry’s Warriors team partnered with crypto blockchain provider Socios.com.
The NBA NFT space has grown largely because of NBA Top Shot. This is a project developed by Dapper Labs that allows fans to sell special and rare basketball moments. NBA Top Shot has experienced major growth over recent years, and it now ranks as one of the leading NFT platforms in terms of sales and trading volumes.
The entire sports sector has also ventured deeply into the crypto space. Football clubs have shown a particular interest in providing a way for their global fan bases to influence and feel closer to the club. An app from Socios.com allows clubs to offer Fan Tokens that let the token owners vote on club decisions and offers them unique rewards.
The Socios.com platform also lets clubs to roll out NFTs. A few months back, AC Milan launched the first ever live “in game” NFTs during their game against AS Roma utilizing the Socios.com app.
