With the many cryptocurrency commercials seen during the Super Bowl, it appears the convergence of sports and crypto will continues to grow in 2022. During the past week, Terra, Crypto.com and FTX all announced sports sponsorship deals.
Sports And Cryptocurrency Deals
Terra’s DAO Sports Sponsorship With Nationals
There have been a wide variety of sports sponsorship deals with the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL in the U.S. over the past year. However, this past week, there was a new “first,” involving Terra (LUNA). The blockchain is widely considered as a relatively decentralized option in relation to the other top 10 chains, (and operator of arguably the leading decentralized stablecoin, UST). Terra sealed it’s first sports sponsorship deal with MLB’s Washington Nationals.
It’s the first time that a DAO governance proposal has been used to secure a sponsorship of this stature. Terra holders voted to approve the proposal, and a few days later, Terra announced the new partner. The move is also significant because of it’s proximity to lawmakers operations in Washington, D.C. Terra will have a variety of assets around the Nationals stadium, and there’s talk that the the team may accept cryptocurrency payments in the future. If the Nats accept Terra’s UST stablecoin, it would be a major stepping stone of UST adoption for the blockchain, and a major score for the Terra team as they look to grow utilization beyond the saturated use of Anchor Protocol.
Kansas Athletics NFT Deal With Mercury
Name, image and likeness legislation across a number of states is less than a year old, but that’s not keeping FTX from staying busy. The exchange is partnering with Florida State softball, it’s latest NIL partnership after previously signing a deal with the UCLA women’s basketball team. The moves highlight FTX’s growing initiatives to gain ground in women’s college sports sponsorship. FSU is not able to offer team-wide deals, so FTX offered each individual player a sponsorship offer.
Meanwhile, Kansas Athletics announced this past week a partnership with white-label NFT platform Mercury. NIL deals, from crypto related companies continue to hit the market as sponsors explore value.
Crypto.com Accelerates Ahead With New F1 Miami Grand Prix Deal
Crypto.com has been very active in the past year with headline-bursting sponsorship deals in multiple sports, and the exchange is back at it again. It was announced that Crypto.com has secured a deal with Formula 1’s Miami GP as an official title partner. F1 racing has been booming in the United States, spurred by Netflix’s ‘Drive To Survive’ series and as evidenced by the huge crowds at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
Austin, Texas-Based ‘Crypto Country Club’ Signs Golfer Joel Dahman
The Waste Management Open in Phoenix Arizona is widely considered the PGA Tour’s ‘party’ event. The 16th hole is without a doubt the ‘rowdiest’ hole in golf, with fans lining up outside as early as 5AM to get a seat at the par 3 hole. PGA Tour golfer Joel Dahman made golfing headlines in the frat party atmosphere at the 16th for taking off his shirt.
Dahman also made other moves this past week. He signed a deal with Crypto Country Club (CCC), an Austin-based NFT project “country club atmosphere” that’s all about golf and crypto. It’s the latest project in the golf arena, joining growing projects such as the noteworthy LinksDAO project – which has attracted golf fanatics such as NBA star Stephon Curry.
