NBA Joins MLB & MLS By Selecting Sorare For NFT Fantasy Game Release, Should Dapper Labs Be Concerned?

1 min read

French company Sorare is well known for its’ European football NFT fantasy game, but it is rapidly expanding into multiple US based sports leagues in 2022

The National Basketball Association and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), have signed their first ever “official NFT fantasy partner” with Sorare, according to a league press release. The announcement does not disclose terms around the multiyear deal, but elaborates that the focal point for Sorare will be to build “the first officially licensed, free-to-play digital collectible-based fantasy basketball game.”

The deal with Sorare continues the NBA’s move into Web3. During NBA All-Star weekend in Cleveland earlier this year, fans were able to design and mint their own custom NFT. The league also released commemorative NFTs of the All-Star Game court.

The Sorare fantasy basketball game could be released as early as this fall. The NBA season is approaching 30 days from tip-off, and the preseason starts later this month. Sorare has set up a landing page for fans to subscribe to receive email updates.

Sorare goes on the Offense in American Sports

Sorare has been rapidly expanding in the US in 2022, having signed NFT deals with several major sports leagues. In March, Major League Soccer formed a partnership with Sorare to launch the league’s official NFT Fantasy game. Then in April, the PGA selected Sorare along with Autograph as their NFT partners. In addition, Major League Baseball announced in May that they had partnered with Sorare to release their free to play fantasy baseball game.

Paris based Sorare got it’s start in European football, merging the concepts of fantasy sports with NFTs. The platform is the leading player in building fantasy sports on a blockchain, and has established a strong rapport with a variety of clubs. Today, Sorare’s football roster is approaching 300 clubs of various sizes and across many geographic locations.

Sorare’s partnership with Major League Baseball allowed full IP access across all 30 major league teams. The company is also working with the NFL to release ‘Rivals,’ another fantasy-inspired NFT game.

Should Dapper Labs be Concerned?

With the new NBA deal with Sorare in place, should Dapper Labs be concerned over a potential new US sports competitor? Competition breeds better products, so it’s not all doom and gloom for Dapper. NBA Top Shot proponents argue that both Sorare and Top Shot can co-exist, and that’s likely true. However, Dapper Labs had long touted the potential around ‘Hardwood,’ a gamified aspect of the NFTs that are in Top Shot’s arsenal. Despite all of this, there’s still plenty for Dapper Labs to be excited about – such as their recently established Ticketmaster partnership.

It will be interesting to see how things shake out in the months ahead.
